Insulation not Isolation

Lets talk about and try to answer a question about how Christ followers are supposed to interact with the world.

Q: Should we remove ourselves from everyone who is not a believer?

A very common question.

(Figure 1) We are not to be “of” the world. We are called to be different.

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

(Figure 2) Jesus sends us into the world.

See how Jesus prays for his disciples. (note the “not” in the first verse)

John 17:15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify[b] them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Therefore my conclusion is:

Be Insulated with the truth of God’s word a a relationship with him, not Isolated from the people who are not believers.

(ps. the great commission wouldn’t really make any sense if we separate from the world completely) (Matthew 28:18-20)
